Wilkinkarra is my home, and my grandfather’s home. Wilkinkarra. And that’s where they used to drink in that swamp and lake, lakeside. And the old people mob and family used to hunt around there in the bush and used to stay in the shelter at the lake. That’s where the drinking water is.

This painting depicts designs associated with the vast claypan site of Murmur, south of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). During ancestral times, a large group of Tingari Men travelled through this site after passing by the rockhole at Tarkul further south. The Men continued on to Wilkinkarra, and later east to Pinari, north-west of Walungurru (Kintore).

Angus Tjungurrayi is the son of internationally renowned Papunya Tula artists Warlimpirrgna Tjapaltjarri and Yalti Napangati. Angus lives and works in Kiwirrkura community, situated deep in the Western Desert, 700 km west of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Angus heralds from a strong lineage of artists, including uncles Walala and Tamayinya Tjapaltjarri, Robert and Vincent Nanala and auntie, Winifred Nanala. He regularly paints his custodial sites and associated Tjukurrpa including Wilkinkarra (Lake Mckay) and the secret-sacred Tingari song-cycle. Angus learnt to paint watching his father in the Kiwirrkura studio, utilising the optical techniques his father is famous for.
