Rwa

That one’s about fire, rwa we call it, burning around the creek. It’s about dreamtime. In the dreamtime, how they would light a fire to travel from country to country. That’s what they told me. They used to get that long stick and dip it into the fire so they could travel by night with it, when those old people would walk around. They would always know where is best to get that fire burning when they’re travelling from country to country. This is like the paths they’re walking.
Peter Corbett Jabarula was born in 1958 at Elkedra Station. He moved to Ali Curung, then Warrabri, in the late 1960s, during ‘welfare days’. Today he is an important elder and custodian in Ali Curung. In adulthood, Peter worked on stations before taking up work at Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre not long after its inception. In 2024, after the best part of two decades as an arts worker, Peter tried his hand at artmaking in ceramics workshops. This led Peter to take up painting for the first time.
