This is Lhurrpa (winter) karnta time (cold time). Family used to go to visit country. This is the best time to dig the witchetty grub. Kids are playing, holding and showing the witchetty grub. Can you see them kids holding it in their hand? And the ladies have buckets full of witchetty grub. We make fire and wait for the fire to come down, move it on the side all the coals and just put ’em in the hot sand. Tjaapa (witchetty grub) cooks in there for maybe 3-5 minutes and then it tastes like a scrambled egg.

Andrea Rontji joined the potters in 2017. Andrea comes from a big family of potters and is the niece of prominent potters Lindy and Carol Rontji and the granddaughter of Virginia Rontji and Irene Entata. Andrea draws her inspiration from the landscape, flora, fauna and community surrounding Ntaria (Hermannsburg). She has a fine attention to detail in her brushwork and is a skilled hand builder with clay. Andrea is central to life at the Pottery as a director and art worker. She has recently travelled overseas to present her work at the Indian Ceramics Triennale in 2024.

Desert Mob is presented annually in Mparntwe | Alice Springs on Arrernte Country.
