In winter it’s really cold and in summer it’s warm, so I’ve painted the pot where we used to go for holiday in winter and summer. Inkaarta Nahasson (my uncle Pastor Nahasson) used to take us camping during summer and winter. Winter, we used to collect bush tucker and stuff and cook goannas and kangaroo and dig for witchetty grubs. In summer we used to enjoy our swimming and fishing. In summer we used to go look for honey ants, for the summer season.

Josie Fly’s mum is Western Arrarnta and her father is from the Czech Republic. Josie was born in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and grew up at Red Sandhill with her mum’s younger sister Rahel Ungwanaka, who was one of the original Hermannsburg Potters. She was also bought up by Rahel’s husband, senior law man Nahasson alongside their six children. Josie fondly remembers spending lots of time with family at special places like Running Waters and Boggy Hole. Josie began at the Hermannsburg Potters in 2023, following her Aunty Rahel’s advice to become a potter.

Desert Mob is presented annually in Mparntwe | Alice Springs on Arrernte Country.
