When the days were governed by those qualified peoples of this land, it was 1901, two men came to the Warumungu lands during the ceremonies of the high class, sorry times as well, times when important artefacts were taken away from their land. A photo was taken of a young Warumungu man, he just passed through to his warrior life – manhood – to be with his peers of knowledge keepers, his social organisation, governed by them. The self-portrait is of myself, Joseph Williams Jungarrayi, done in the charcoal medium and on acetate mining maps. The other portrait, the Warumungu man, is a monochrome I painted with burnt sienna pigment.

Desert Mob is presented annually in Mparntwe | Alice Springs on Arrernte Country.
