This is Upupily-upupilya (Tadpole), the sacred rock hole situated near to Cundeelee Mission.

The characters who inhabit the spiritual narrative are creation beings, powerful metamorphic beings who shaped the immediate environment as they moved through it, leaving the moral framework etched into the very fabric of the landscape for future generations.

Michael was born at Cundeelee Mission in the late sixties to renowned artists Simon and Estelle Hogan. His brother is the artist Timo Hogan. Michael went to the Mission primary school and high school at Coonana after Cundeelee closed. He attended Wongatha Caps, a Christian Collage in Esperence and also did some schooling in Perth. He has watched from afar his parents’ hugely successful painting careers and in early 2023 decided he was ready to depict his story on canvas.

Desert Mob is presented annually in Mparntwe | Alice Springs on Arrernte Country.

On behalf of Desart’s staff and art centre members, the Executive Committee humbly and respectfully acknowledge the Arrernte Apmereke Artweye (Traditional Owners) and Kwertengerle (Traditional Managers) of Mparntwe.
