Tjarlirli & Kaltukatjara Art
TKA01-25

This painting refers to Itjari-itjari, an elusive marsupial mole found in the Western Desert, and an important ancestral being.

Pantjiti Unkari McKenzie OAM is a revered senior cultural leader and multidisciplinary artist, whose creative practice spans fibre art, carving, acting, filmmaking, and painting. A respected educator, language teacher, ngangkaṟi (traditional healer), and cultural advisor, Pantjiti was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2019.

Pantjiti Unkari McKenzie’s works vibrate with movement and energy. Layering colours and patterns that refer to features of country and ceremonial markings, initial marks are often deliberately obscured and then echoed as she works the canvas. Her painting reflects her deep knowledge of place and culture. She paints this experience of country and inma (ceremony) depicting kapi tjukurla (rockholes), karu (creeks), tali (sandhills) and women’s ceremonial patterns.

Desert Mob is presented annually in Mparntwe | Alice Springs on Arrernte Country.

On behalf of Desart’s staff and art centre members, the Executive Committee humbly and respectfully acknowledge the Arrernte Apmereke Artweye (Traditional Owners) and Kwertengerle (Traditional Managers) of Mparntwe.
