It was good to make this new ceramic bird, side by side with my mother. And watching the other artists Dulcie and Rhonda do it too, because they are very good artists and usually I am working as an artworker and I do a lot of sewing.

Vanessa Splinter was born and raised in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) but grew up sometimes in her father’s country at Wave Hill. Vanessa went to school at Yirara College in Mparntwe. Vanessa works in the art room as an art worker and sometimes artist, alongside her mother, Marlene Rubuntja. Over the years, Vanessa has made some soft sculptures, worked on some of the Yarrenyty Arltere short films, made limited-edition etchings and now ceramics. Vanessa says she is proud of the art room for what it has given the Yarrenyty Arltere Town Camp, providing a place for people’s aspirations, creative excellence, and economic security. She says it is a good place for people to come together and celebrate each other’s achievements.

Desert Mob is presented annually in Mparntwe | Alice Springs on Arrernte Country.

On behalf of Desart’s staff and art centre members, the Executive Committee humbly and respectfully acknowledge the Arrernte Apmereke Artweye (Traditional Owners) and Kwertengerle (Traditional Managers) of Mparntwe.
