Born in Kaltjiti, located on the APY Lands, Fiona Pompey details the sweeping, undulated sand hills of the surrounding desert country. Her paintings draw influence from her late mother, Kunmanara (Tali Tali) Pompey, who was well known for her powerful paintings. Fiona captures the expansive, almost hypnotic repetition of the sandhill landscape through her careful choice of semi-toned colours and layering. The small, rounded shapes reflect the habitat of shrubs, trees and bushes. These grow on the sides and at the base of the sand hill where the water collects. They provide a valuable source of many food bearing grasses and shrubs. Fiona currently lives in Kaltjiti and paints in the studio at Kaltjiti Arts.

Desert Mob is presented annually in Mparntwe | Alice Springs on Arrernte Country.

On behalf of Desart’s staff and art centre members, the Executive Committee humbly and respectfully acknowledge the Arrernte Apmereke Artweye (Traditional Owners) and Kwertengerle (Traditional Managers) of Mparntwe.
